The Great Flats of Bungonia.
Sixteen kilometres past the last legible sign, the road stops pretending. Bitumen gives up. Gravel takes over for a while and then that gives up too. What follows is the Flats. Locals do not name it. HQ files it under Zone 04.
The wind here has an accent. It carries dust that tastes faintly of iron and something older. Nothing grows above knee height. Nothing leaves faster than it arrived. The horizon does not curve so much as sag.
Three operative transmissions have originated from this location in the last twelve months. Two are unaccounted for. The third came back changed, refused to speak on record, and now runs the transmission desk on Thursdays.
It is not that Bungonia is haunted. Bungonia is the haunting. The rest of the country is what it left behind. OPERATIVE FILE 041, PSYCH EVALUATION, ATTACHMENT B
